Historical background[ edit ] Wolfe intended his novel to capture the essence of New York City in the s. Wall Street in the s was newly resurgent after most of the previous decade had been bad for stocks.
Beneath Wall Street's success, the city was a hot-bed of racial and cultural tension. Homelessness and crime in the city were growing. Several high-profile racial incidents polarized the city, particularly two black men who were murdered in white neighborhoods: In another episode that became a subject of much media attention, Bernhard Goetz became something of a folk-hero in the city for shooting a group of black men who tried to rob him in the subway in Roberts , a Bronx judge known for his no-nonsense imperious handling of cases in his courtroom, became the model for the character of Myron Kovitsky in the book.
Among his models was William Makepeace Thackeray 's Vanity Fair , which described the society of 19th century England. Wolfe remained occupied writing nonfiction books on his own and contributing to Harper's until , when he ceased his other projects to work on the novel. Wolfe began researching the novel by observing cases at the Manhattan Criminal Court and shadowing members of the Bronx homicide squad. To overcome a case of writer's block, Wolfe wrote to Jann Wenner , editor of Rolling Stone, to propose an idea drawn from Charles Dickens and Thackeray.
The Victorian writers whom Wolfe viewed as his models had often written their novels in serial installments. Wolfe was not happy with his "very public first draft", and thoroughly revised his work. Even Sherman McCoy, the central character of the novel, changed—originally a writer, in the book version he is cast as a bond salesman. Wolfe came up with the revised occupation after spending a day on the government-bond desk of Salomon Brothers , with many of the traders who later founded the notorious hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management.
I have made a few threads and posted a few comments, but overall I have mostly just lurked. I am hoping to change all that starting today. Hopefully I can make up for my boring writing style by being diligent with updates and progress regarding my journey. I am sure most of you have seen these "i wanna be a pro poker player" threads a million times over, and I am sure most of them fail miserably. I am hoping that I can defy the odds, and become one of those rare success stories.
That being said, hopefully someone on this site gives a fuck and is able to follow my story with interest. I am hoping to use this thread as a tool to motivate me and keep me focused on my goals. Along with that, I would also hope that It can spark discussion on hh's, strategy, and just poker in general. So don't expect to much excitement in this thread. I am very determined to improve my cash game but for now i will be sticking with what i know can make me money.

This time last year, I had just quit my desk job on impulse with the intention of finding something better within the month. Needing money fast I decided to deposit 90 dollars onto poker stars and try my luck.
I had brief success back in online with ub and for a brief period it was my dream to be a pro poker player. After that I pretty much believed I was going to make hundreds of thousands a year no problem and be an instant pro. I grinded 30r 50r and s mtts and 4 months later i went broke. And when i say "grind" i mean a day days a weeek lol. But at the time i had no idea what I was doing. Anyways the dream died and i hopped from job to job until I found one I deemed worthy and paid me well.
I eventually found that job and stayed there for 2 years before throwing it away. Anyways I had put my 90 dollars on pstars this time last year. I end up shipping a 33 dollar mtt for or something and decide to give poker another shot.
